Everyone has seen it, but its potential for philosophical discussion is nearly endless. To the right you will find postings of some discussion starters about the latent messages embedded in this film. To the left you will find pages which focus on a particular category of philosophical thought: metaphysics, epistemology, axiology and logic. Follow the white rabbit, my friend...

Metaphysics- What is real?

Metaphysics is a core concept of philosophy which seeks to explain the nature of reality. How do we reconcile the duality of our perception of the material and the immaterial— the mysterious relationship between the mind and body? Metaphysical arguments also tend toward cosmological arguments about the origins of existence.

For example, in The Matrix Morpheus shows us the disconnect between Neo’s perceptions of reality while in the Matrix and his true feeble state as machines harvest human energy while providing them an elaborate dream in which they are born and are expected to die. He goes on to explain how it all happened and how the illusion is sustained.

So what do we take away from it all once the credits stop rolling? What ideas and new concepts have the Wachowski brothers planted in our minds that continue to bounce around in our heads when we turn off the DVD player and step back into reality?
