Everyone has seen it, but its potential for philosophical discussion is nearly endless. To the right you will find postings of some discussion starters about the latent messages embedded in this film. To the left you will find pages which focus on a particular category of philosophical thought: metaphysics, epistemology, axiology and logic. Follow the white rabbit, my friend...

Epistemology- How do we know what we think we know?

Epistemology is another core concept of philosophy which seeks to explain the valid authorities in which we place our trust while seeking truth. There are many different ways to validate knowledge—God, science, God as science, experience, sensory perceptions, feeling, the self, etc.

When Neo is presented a completely new perspective on the nature of his existence his skepticism surfaces. How does Neo come to know he is “the one?” In which authorities does Neo put his trust—the Oracle? Trinity? Some abstract concept, such as fate? Or did his knowledge come from within?

So if you have come to terms with the fact that The Matrix is a work of fiction and your perception of reality remains unchanged, humor me: in which authorities do you place your trust in rejecting the scenario we are presented in the film. How do we know that we are not just a bunch of bodies laying in vats of pink goo?
